flatiron


why is it called a flatiron? i was searching online but came up empty handed. a few weeks ago, we wandered and snapped in the st. lawrence market hood. the curves of the flatiron seduced me. what a beauty.

It's called a flatiron because it's in the shape of the irons used at the time for clothes. There were a solid triangle of iron with a handle and you put them on your stove to heat up and had to put a cloth over them so you wouldn't get burned when using them. The first flatiron was built in NYC. Still standing I believe though I forget the addy. "Flatiron" was the knickname New Yorkers gave it because that's what the triangular shape reminded them of. Who knew that one of the myriad of factoids floating in my brain would actually be of use one day? Heh!
